Reiki-literally meaning spiritual energy, is a healing and mystical practice developed by Japanese Buddhist – Mikau Usui. Based on palm healing and hands-on-healing, Reiki has been widely practiced as an alternative healing treatment. Practitioners generally transfer universal energy called as qi (ki in Japanese) through the use of Reiki techniques, which promotes a state of equilibrium and overall well being. Reiki is thus often regarded as energy medicine. In contrast to other energy therapies, Reiki is accessed through, but not directed by, the practitioner.

Reiki can be broadly divided into two main branches- Western Reiki and traditional Japanese Reiki. Though both the branches differ in many aspects, the primary one is that the western forms use organized hand-placements rather than relying on an instinctive sense of hand-positions as used by Japanese Reiki branches. Both the branches have a three layer hierarchy- first, second and the master level. The master level is the highest and meant for those who want to teach and practice Reiki. All the three levels have their own set of techniques.

The developer of Reiki- Mikau Usui was a firm believer and devotee of Emperor Meiji. While summarizing his own findings, he laid down some principles which later came to be known as the five principles of Reiki. These are basically teachings against killing, sexual misconduct, thievery, lying and intemperance. Reiki practitioners strictly abide by these guiding principles.

One principally places their hands in prayer position, closes their eyes, and brings all their awareness to the tip of the fire (middle) finger.

Reiki meditation can be done in several ways.  The first and foremost way is to watch one’s breath. A technique called Joshin Kokyū-hō is used in this. It literally means ‘Goddess breathing manner’. This is the foundation of almost all the meditation practices. Proper breathing patterns promote well being and harmony. This increase emotional and spiritual health which in turn, helps in the development of the brain.

One can also practice Reiki meditation by using an object and focusing all the energies on it. This greatly helps in improving concentration and improves overall productivity.
